Have you ever thought about how many different types of snacks there are in the world? There are literally thousands of different snacks – and then you add in the different flavors and that number gets even bigger!

But, we bet you never thought that this would be in the snack aisle next to the beef jerky.

The makers of Spam, yes Spam in a can, have decided to branch out into the dried meat snack industry. Hormel Foods Corporation announced it early in June that soon enough, we will be seeing bite-sized pieces of Spam packaged as “Spam Snacks.”

Spam Snacks will be hitting select stores as early as this fall – talk about a quick entrance into the market! And, these bite-sized pieces are coming with a kick of flavors, including teriyaki, bacon and of course the classic Spam flavor many people are familiar with.

The dried meat section of the snack area has been expanding and has been full of serious competition. It’s been congested with a lot of brands offering dried jerky in different flavors – but Spam has definitely not been a part of this market.

At the Sweets & Snacks Expo this year, there was a dried meat sampling station at what seemed to be every five or so booths. Certainly there were different qualities, price points, flavors, and meats (although mostly beef and turkey). Spam Snacks are going to make a splash this year as they hold a very unique niche in the market.

For those of you who are still asking what exactly Spam is, the ingredients on a can of Spam list “pork shoulder and ham, sodium chloride (salt), water, potato starch, sugar and sodium nitrate.”
