If you’ve ever been faced with the (truly) horrific choice of choosing between desserts, you know the struggle. Faced with an impossible decision, more often than not, you’re left wishing you had 5 stomachs to eat it all, amirite? Luckily, these days, the culinary world is always experimenting, with new hybrid foods popping up daily… which is amazing news for us indecisive eaters.

Well sweet tooths, take note – some dessert masters have gone rogue and changed the ice cream game forever… this time, with some seriously magical results.

No, you are not seeing things. No, this is not some hazy, sugar-fuelled dream. Cotton candy ice cream cones are actually a thing, and they’re slowly taking over the world (or Instagram at least).

There are so many ways to describe the beauty of this treat – a fluffy fairy tutu, a dreamy cotton cloud… Regardless of how you spin it though, it’s pretty clear that this is more than just ice cream – it’s a delicious piece of edible art, one that seemingly defies gravity and is sweet enough to make grown adults cry.

So who can we thank for this tooth-achingly beautiful idea?

We can trace the trend back to Australia’s popular ice cream joint, Aqua S, where founder Jennifer Lam literally dreamt up the idea one night while dreaming about whipped sugar. Following her passion, she swapped her accounting career for one in ice cream and has since opened up delightful ice cream shops in both Sydney and Melbourne. With the dessert game changed forever, now ice cream makers around the world are following suit.

Londoners can get their paws on this insane treat at Milk Train Café, found in London’s Covent Garden, where vanilla, matcha and rotating flavours are on offer. Closer to home, there’s Wu Kong in New York City, which adapts the craze to traditional scooped ice cream. Regardless of the variations, yes, at all three spots, the cones are larger than your face and that’s not the end: customers can also top their treats with additional goods like popcorn, nuts, candy and more. Because what even are calories, right?

And sure, you might be thinking: are these cones a bit over-the-top? Perhaps… but hey, what’s life without a little sugary magic?

The only question left to ask is – where will these epic cones pop up next?
